Construction materials.

The early 752 Good's yard cranes had their base (without steps) made of cast iron.
The Avro Vulcan, the semi-trailer of the Pullmore car transporter, the Car carrier and trailer 984 and 985 and a few tankers 30 P were all cast in aluminium

  Axles diameters.

The measures given are in inches, not in millimeters and are not exact.
• 0,62 in. = 1,57 mm.
• 0,78 in. = 1,98 mm.
At that time, wires were measured in British Imperial wire gauge (S.W.G.).
The Dinky axle diameters are :
SWG 16 = 0.064 in. = 1.626 mm.
SWG 14 = 0.080 in. = 2.032 mm.
SWG 13 = 0.092 in. = 2.337 mm.
There may be an exception for the 925 Aveling Barford dump truck  issued in 1972  when Meccano may have gone metric and the axles are either Ø 4 mm. or
SWG 8 = 0.160 in. = 4.064 mm.

  Scales.

The scale of Dinky Toys is generaly known as 1/43°. In fact this is the exception. Only the goods yard crane and "O" gauge items are 1/43° .
EXCEPTIONS: 149 Dyane Citroën and 166 Renault 16 TL, but these are french Dinky.
For more information on scales, visit the scales page.

  Numbering system.

The reason for changing from the old system of two numbers and one or two letters is the introduction of "data processing". Nothing as we know now with computers but the system used punched cards which were sorted by very fast machines made by International Business Machines (now called Big Brother). This system could not cope with the old system of mixed numbers and letters and a new numbering system consisting of numbers only had to be used.
Only in the mid 90's, the french engineers who designed the mail sorting machines for the British Post Office managed to write a software that could understand and sort the British mixed post codes.
